Will a college reject the application essay if there are no spaces between paragraphs? I already submitted mine. The formatting was messed up in the Coalition app and the PDF shows a single, large block of text. Should I write to the college?

I LOVE this question. not just because I am the author of so many books, but because I have to read so much bad student writing. Begin each essay assignment by being perfectly clear about what the professor wants. Every communication (e.g, essay, speech, memo, book, conversation) is an attempt at interaction with other persons. Start with the other end of the communication in mind. What does that person want or need? Specifically regarding the end of an essay here is what I want. when you have covered the points I requested, just stop writing. Don’t go on to repeat what you have already told me. (I can re-read it, those lines are still there, if necessary.) Don’t insert a quote from someone else and rely upon me to figure out how or if it ties it to what you have already said. Don’t run off in some completely different direction out of some belated attempt to achieve breadth. And for the introduction. state your conclusion in the first sentence. Have everything else in the essay support that conclusion. We are no longer in the 13th century when St. Thomas Aquinas could begin with stating the opposite of his conclusion, and then systematically refute it before making his case. I give these guidelines because of the kind of writing I teach. writing for clinical, human service, and business contexts. Most of my students are going to become nurses, social workers, counselors, administrators. Their communications will be organizational memos and reports that greatly impact people’s lives. Be clear, be concise, and comprehensive, and don’t sacrifice the first two to achieve the last one of these goals. Meandering introductions and redundant conclusions work against these goals.

Write on PDF: All You Need to Know

I know in a class or a conference a lot of students will want to say, “Wow.” But what they really mean is, “It took this long.” The second half of this essay contains a few examples of the kinds of questions that are good to get at the end of an oral argument.
